Ensure your home is the safe place it should be. See if you have taken all the necessary precautions.

 

homesWhere do you feel the safest? Most people would say in their home. To prevent slips, trips, and falls, make use of the following tips to see if you have taken all the necessary precautions. You may need to make some changes to ensure your home is the safe place it should be.

Kitchen
• Flooring has good grip properties.
• Floors are clear of trip hazards, such as throw rugs.
• A sturdy, stable stepladder or step stool is kept handy to reach objects in overhead cabinets.
• Any spills (liquid or dry goods) are wiped up immediately.

Stairways and Halls
• Steps are free of objects.
• Steps are in good condition with non-skid strips.
• Stairways and halls are well lit.
• Securely fastened, sturdy handrails are on both sides of the stairway.

Bathroom
• The bathtub or shower has a non-slip surface.
• Grab bars are installed on the walls of the bathtub and shower and near the toilet.

Bedroom
• An adequate-sized nightstand or small table is kept beside the bed for the telephone, glasses, lamp, etc.

Living Room
• Major traffic pathways are kept clear of electrical cords and other clutter.
• Generous space is left around furniture to allow for safe movement.

Outside
• All entrances are kept well lit.
• Steps and walkways are in good repair and free of objects, snow, ice, and leaves.
