Medicine Safety

Here are some guidelines to follow when it comes to medicine.

pills smPeople take medicine to feel better. Health care professionals prescribe some types of medicine, while others are purchased over the counter. No matter the type of medicine, precautions must be taken to ensure the safety of those taking the medicine as well as others they come in contact with, especially children.

Keep the following in mind when it comes to medicine:

• Read, then re-read medicine labels.

• Follow the directions provided.

• Make yourself aware of the side effects.

• Understand the risks associated with taking the medicine.

• Talk to your health care professional, if you have questions.

• Ask a pharmacist for written information.

• Use the same pharmacy for all your purchases.

• Keep up-to-date records of all your medications.

• Keep your medications in their original containers.

• Never combine different types of medications in the same container.

• Report side effects and symptoms to a qualified health care professional.

• Keep all vitamins, minerals, herbs and medications out of the reach of children!
