Pedestrian Safety – Our Shared Responsibility

Even one vehicle-pedestrian collision is too many. We all have a role to play in reducing these preventable injuries. Here is a list of helpful tips for pedestrians and motorists.

The good news is the number of pedestrian and vehicle collisions continues to decrease because of safe driving initiatives, stringent roadway enforcement, attentive drivers, and alert pedestrians. However, even one vehicle-pedestrian collision is too many.

We all have a role to play in reducing these preventable injuries. Here is a list of helpful tips for pedestrians and motorists.

Pedestrians
• STOP before crossing roadways and never walk between parked cars.
• LOOK in both directions before crossing at marked intersections.
• LISTEN for oncoming traffic and emergency vehicle sirens.
• WEAR brightly coloured clothing with reflective strips when walking at dawn or dusk.

Motorists
• Stay alert and never exceed the speed limit, especially when driving on residential streets and through school zones.
• Turn off your cell phone and reduce other distractions while driving.
• Always look for pedestrians, particularly when backing up and making turns.
