Overview of Chrysler Canada's Smoking Cessation Program

A summary of the Chrysler Canada's Smoking Cessation Program that is offered to employees, retirees, and families.

Here are some questions and answers that you or your family member may have about the program.

 

Who is eligible for the program? All employees,Employeeretirees, and dependents who are eligible for and enrolled in a Chrysler Canada health care (or prescription drug) benefits program can use the smoking cessation program.


Where can the list of participating pharmacies be found?
There are over 200 pharmacies with Brief Tobacco Intervention (BTI) trained pharmacists in Ontario and another 75 pharmacies outside of Ontario from which to choose. You may inquire about pharmacies in your area by phoning Green Shield Customer Service at 1-888-711-1119 or by referring to the updated list in the Health Service Providers section of Green Shield’s website.

 
What are prescribed smoking cessation aids?  Pharmaceutical products which are prescribed by your physician to assist you in your efforts to quit smoking are considered smoking cessation aids. There are limitations to the amount of each product (e.g., Nicorette gum to a maximum of 945 pieces, patches to a maximum of 84 etc.). Not all smoking cessation aids require a prescription by law, however, eligibility for reimbursement under the prescription drug program requires a prescription be presented and filled at a pharmacy and an official prescription receipt be obtained. Cash register receipts are not eligible and reimbursement is not provided for products you purchase yourself without a prescription.


The following are currently included as eligible smoking cessation aids:

1) Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)

  • gum
  • patches
  • inhaler

2 Oral medications

  • Champix
  • Zyban

 

Pharmacist

 Can I use the services of a trained pharmacist 
 without using a smoking cessation aid?

 Yes, Brief Tobacco Intervention counseling is a 
 fully covered benefit for those who register,
 regardless of whether or not a prescription for a
 smoking cessation aid is part of the quit plan.

 

Can I get prescribed smoking cessation aids without using the Brief Tobacco Intervention (BTI) services of a pharmacist? Your physician may prescribe smoking cessation aids even if you decide not to enroll in the BTI program. The cost of these prescriptions will not be reimbursed by the Company drug plan and will be fully the financial responsibility of the plan member who does not enter the BTI program.


How does the Brief Tobacco Intervention program work?

Here are the steps :

  • A. Smoker considers quitting and wants to find out more about the Chrysler Canada Smoking Cessation Program.
  • B. Make an appointment with a Brief Tobacco Intervention trained pharmacist of choice for initial assessment.
  • C. Attend initial assessment appointment in person (meeting is approximately 30 minutes long).
1. If ready to proceed, discuss best quit method and date to begin (Day 1).
2. If not ready to proceed, receive educational information from pharmacist for future consideration.

 

  • D. If smoking cessation aid is to be used, visit physician to discuss and obtain prescription.
  • E. On Day 1, fill prescription for smoking cessation aid, if applicable, and begin quit program. Initial and subsequent prescriptions and/or refills for smoking cessation aids will be covered as per the provisions of the prescription drug plan while participation in the Brief Tobacco Intervention program continues. Should the plan member drop out at any point voluntarily or by not adhering to the program rules for scheduled follow ups, reimbursement for smoking cessation aids will cease.
  • F. Participate in six follow up steps with your pharmacist according to the schedule below. Follow up steps are normally initiated by the pharmacist and may be done by telephone. Discuss prearranging the time for follow ups with your pharmacist, particularly if you work shifts.

 

1. Day 3-5 10 minutes

2. Day 7-10 10 minutes

3. Day 14-21 10 minutes

4. Day 30 3-5 minutes

5. Day 60 3-5 minutes

6. Day 180 3-5 minutes

 

What will the program cost the plan member? Brief Tobacco Intervention pharmacist services are offered at no cost to the plan member, these services will be covered by the Company benefits plan.
