Local 444 Retirees - Spring 2010

Wellness Events The Local 444 retirees are an active group! A number of Local 444 retirees worked with retirees from Ford and General Motors to plan the 8th Annual Health and Wellness Day for CAW retirees. This event was held on Tuesday, May 18, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The purpose of this event was to link retirees with health and wellness services and resources in Windsor-Essex County.

This year’s event provided CAW retirees with the opportunity to have free on-the-spot health screenings, listen to special guest speakers, and see healthy food demonstrations. Over 450 retirees attended this event! There were a variety of on-the-spot screenings available, including: hearing testing; vision testing; blood glucose, blood pressure, and blood cholesterol tests; lung function testing; foot care assessments; mental health assessments; and medication reviews. Retirees could participate in all screenings if they wanted to; health care professionals performed over 570 screenings. Retirees were also encouraged to pick up information from community agencies to support their wellness. The event concluded with a free hot lunch for retirees.

Cancer Prevention: It’s All About You Windsor City Councillor, Ron Jones, and Dr. John Day presented information on the recommendations and benefits of health screening and the importance of being committed to your personal health. This presentation took place at the June 9 retirees’ meeting.

Local 444 Retirees Support Wellness This year, 24 retirees got their flu shots after the retirees’ meeting on November 11.

Being with others in a positive social environment is also good for our overall health and well-being. The Local 444 retirees’ activity committee plans a number of trips for their members throughout the year. A bus trip to the Point Edward Charity Casino was planned for the end of March and a bus trip to the 1000 Islands is being planned for July 19 – 23.

The Local 444 retirees are stepping out. Some Local 444 retirees have started line dancing every Tuesday morning for two hours. The line dancing group has grown to about 40 members. These line dancers are going to be fi tted with CAW 444 shirts and will be entertaining in nursing homes in the area. The retirees are having fun and enjoy reaching out to the community as well.

The Local 444 retirees are known for giving back to their community. For example, they have sold books and donated the money to the Windsor area community offi ce of the Lung Association. They have also held a bake sale and a raffl e to help the local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Society. A country dance and buffet was held on April 8 to raise funds for Hiatus House, an agency that helps families suffering from domestic violence. Way to go, Local 444 retirees!
